Recipe of the Month – August
I create each of my monthly recipes as a free service to you. None of these featured recipes are in my cookbook.
Wheat Free (Gluten-free) Play Dough
1 cup Rumford® corn starch*
1 cup white rice flour
1 cup salt
1 tbsp. cream of tartar
3 tbsp. cooking oil
1 1/2 cups warm water
6 drops sweet orange essential oil (deters mildew)
Food coloring of your choice
Mix all of the dry ingredients together with a wire whisk and then add in the water. Whisk all of this together in a large bowl until the salt has dissolved. Whisk in the oil and essential oil.
Divide however much you want to make into smaller containers, and add in food coloring until you get the color you want. Keep in mind the play dough will be just a bit darker in color than the liquid is.
Add the liquid in batches, into a pan, and stir. Turn the eye on medium heat, and cook the liquid while you’re stirring it. It will start to pull away from the pan after about two minutes. This happens very quickly. Stir constantly until all the liquid is solidified. When this happens, take it off the heat and remove it from the pan onto a paper plate. Once cooled enough to handle, knead the dough until it’s smooth. Allow it to cool completely before storing.
Continue this process until you’ve used all the liquid and made all your colors. Be sure to stir it well each time you start a new batch! Store tightly sealed, in containers with lids.
You should get about 9 weeks of play before it begins showing signs of dryness, if you keep it in a tightly sealed container between uses.
*Rumford corn starch is GMO-Free. If you’re avoiding corn, you can substitute 1 cup of tapioca flour for the corn starch.
